8 NJ Cops Suspended for Snoozing During Shifts

Eight cops in New Jersey – including two supervisors -- were caught sleeping on the job, officials say.

The cops, all with the Long Branch Police Department, are now facing suspensions of up to 45 days after officials learned they’d been snoozing during their shifts. But Mayor Adam Schneider says that despite the cops’ actions, not a single call was missed.

The police officers all worked the graveyard shift at the department and would park their cruisers behind a town fire station while they napped, some spending the entire night parked there.

Authorities say they learned the cops were sleeping on the job after GPS units were installed in the car.
It's not the worst thing, but we treated it like it was," Schneider said.

Community activists say that the napping cops points to a bigger problem.

“These officers left their posts at most dangerous times, when they were needed,” said activists Avery Grant.

Schneider said that to prevent officers from sleeping on the job in the future, the department has restructured its overnight shifts.
