A Syracuse University student heading home to Queens was killed and 21 other people were hurt in a crash involving a bus and several cars on a Garden State highway Thursday night, authorities say.
A source tells News 4 that the crash near exit 43 on the eastbound side of Route 80 in Parsippany-Troy Hills involved a bus belonging to Adirondack Bus Lines and several other vehicles. The bus was headed to New York City, though it's unclear where it originated.
Brianna Herrera, 21, died at the scene, state police said. Morristown Medical Center received at least 21 patients from the crash, ranging from fair to critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. By Friday morning, only three remained in the hospital -- one of those victims was in critical condition.
Herrera was a senior at Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, heading home to Ozone Park, according to campus newspaper The Newshouse. She was also a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
More than 1,000 mourners gathered at a vigil on the Syracuse University campus Friday night to remember Herrera.
