Elderly Woman Dies in New City Fire

It's not clear how the Friday night blaze started

An elderly woman died in a Rockland County house fire Friday night, officials said.

Firefighters responding to a call at 7 Central Ave. in New City at about 10:30 p.m. discovered a resident, 75-year-old Eleanor Luciano, was inside.

Her son, 56-year-old Lou Kasamis, was able to escape the fire, but firefighters were unable to penetrate the thick flames and smoke to get to his mother, police said.

The fire was under control in within about 30 minutes, and Luciano's body was found on the second floor of the home.

It's not clear how the blaze started, but it does not appear to be suspicious, police said.

Investigation is ongoing.
