Nearly 800 NYC School Workers Face Layoffs

Nearly 800 New York City school workers face layoffs in the fall due to budget cuts.

Education officials said Tuesday that school aides, parent coordinators and other public support staffers will get pink slips in October.

Teachers will be spared from the October layoffs.

Nearly 2,000 teachers are losing their full-time positions but are entitled to stay on as temporary instructors or substitutes.

Almost half of those teachers have found new positions or left the school system.

The mayor's office says the October cuts are the result of the city's inability to reach an agreement with unions during budget talks.
