Nassau Medical Center to Offer Free Zika Testing

Nassau University Medical Center will offer free testing for people who think they may be at risk of contracting the Zika virus, Newsday reported.

Free testing for the virus is expected to be made available to people returning from areas where the virus is widespread, according to the report.

Dr. Victor Politi, president and chief executive of the medical center, will make the announcement in a news conference Friday afternoon.

The Zika virus causes birth defects and miscarriages in pregnant women and typically spreads by the bite of a specific mosquito, but can be transmitted sexually in some instances.

52 people in the United States have been infected with the Zika virus after traveling to regions like Latin America and the Caribbean. One person in Dallas, Texas, was infected through sexual contact.
