Nassau County Offers Traffic, Parking Ticket Amnesty

Traffic scofflaws could get off easy in Long Island’s Nassau County this week, thanks to a new amnesty program.

The county, which has nearly 572,000 unpaid traffic and parking tickets on the book, will reduced fines and fees for people who pay tickets between Feb. 22 and May 22. Paying tickets during that period will also not affect a violator’s credit, county officials say.

Under the program, violators who pony up for tickets issued between 1982 and 2013 will have their original fine cut in half, and all fees and penalties will be waived.

“You can save yourself a lot of money,” said John Marks with the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency. “Come in. We’ll work with you."

The plan is aimed to recoup some of the $119 million the county is owned in traffic and parking fines.

The county enacted a similar amnesty program in 2011, but they only collected about $150,000.
