NY's Top Security Official Steps Down

New York state's deputy secretary for public safety says he's leaving to work in the private sector.

Michael Balboni is a Republican who served two Democratic governors. The former Long Island senator will finish his time in state government next week and take a job based in Washington.

His resignation is expected to be announced soon.

Balboni is a former state assemblyman and senator from Nassau County who wrote the state's anti-terrorism law of 2001. As a senator, he was called state government's authority on anti-terrorism and frequently worked with federal officials including the CIA and FBI in Washington.

He turned to the field following the Sept. 11 attacks, in what he called his defining moment in government. His sister had an appointment that day in the World Trade Center, but it was canceled.
