The City Planning Commission has approved a scaled-down plan of New York University's expansion plans in Greenwich Village.
The changes include reducing the size of two towers and dropping plans to use space as a hotel. It also would eliminate a commercial rezoning that would have allowed shops in some old industrial buildings.
The proposal must be approved by the City Council.
It also calls for eliminating underground academic space that would have affected trees and other plantings.
Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, told the Wall Street Journal his organization will continue to urge the Council to reject NYU's expansion in the village altogether.
NYU's plans include building a new performing arts center, a dormitory and a gym near Washington Square Park.
