NYPD Sgt. Pleads Guilty to Computer Snooping

A New York City police sergeant has pleaded guilty to illegally accessing the FBI terrorist watch list to help a Canadian acquaintance win a child-custody dispute.

Sgt. Haytham Khalil, of Brooklyn, entered the plea Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Khalil was charged with accessing the computer without authorization in December 2007 to obtain information from the FBI's National Crime Information Center.

Investigators traced the document to a computer search that Khalil had made. He borrowed the sign-on identification of an officer who was authorized to use the computer database.

He is set to be sentenced April 14. The charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison.
