NYPD Seeks “Handle Surfer”

New York City police are asking for the public's help in identifying a "handle surfer," suspected in a series of break-ins of parked cars in Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The suspect is believed to "handle surf," which police describe as walking along rows of parked cars and checking door handles to see whether the vehicles are locked. The suspect enters unlocked vehicles and steals anything valuable, police said Saturday.

Investigators released a photo of the suspect, taken at a CVS pharmacy where she used a credit card stolen from one of the vehicles.

The suspect has taken pocketbooks containing credit cards, cash and cell phones from four vehicles in the Midland Beach area of Staten Island and one on 65th Street in Brooklyn, investigators said.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM.
