Cop Slashed With Box Cutter While Trying to Break Up Fight in Brooklyn: NYPD

A cop was slashed with a box cutter while trying to break up a fight in Brooklyn Sunday morning, authorities say.

Authorities say the officer cut on the cheek after she was called to the fight at Saratoga Avenue and Marion Street in the Ocean Hill subsection of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Authorities say the woman accused of cutting the cop, 27-year-old Xiomora Velez, was arrested at the scene. She’s charged with assault on a police officer, menacing, resisting arrest and criminal weapons possession.

The officer was treated at New York Methodist Hospital and did not need stitches.

Residents in the neighborhood said the slashing was a scare.

"It was very bad," said Annmarie Roberts. "They're there to protect and serve."

It wasn’t immediately clear if Velez had an attorney who could comment on the charges.

The slashing comes amid increased attention to cutting attacks in New York City. Over the weekend, four people were slashed in the Bronx in separate attacks. Late last week, at least three people were also slashed in Manhattan.

There have been 567 slashings and stabbings in New York City this year. That's up from 470 through the same time period in 2015. Overall, crime is down in the city in 2016 compared with last year.
