NYPD Fun Facts for Pope Francis' Historic New York Visit

Facilitating Pope Francis' visit during the United Nation's General Assembly will be the "largest security challenger ever"  faced by the NYPD, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. Here are some facts, provided by the NYPD, about what it takes to provide that protection:

  • The NYPD will use 24,500 barriers and they only own 14,000 barriers. A total of 37 miles worth of barriers will be used or 196,000 feet.                                                                                                                                                          
  • The NYPD are using 1,200 traffic cones                                                                                                                  
  • 43 sand trucks are in use for the Central Park security plan                                                                                                      
  • 409 pieces of concrete block are used citywide. Each weigh 3,900 pounds each, totaling 818 tons.                                                                                                                                                                                                      
  • The NYPD are using 19 barrier trucks for St. Francis' visit                                                                        
  • Pope Francis will be in the Big Apple for 39 hours and 40 minutes. He will be 4,270 miles from home in JFK Airport and cover 54 miles on New York soil.                                                                                
  • 200 different motorcades are in the city between the Pope and United Nations General Assembly
