More Training for NYPD After Chokehold Death

Training will include how to talk to the public, how to de-escalate tense situations and how to use force if necessary, Bratton said

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says officers will get annual training on the use of force following the death of an unarmed man who died after being put in a chokehold in police custody this summer.

Bratton said Monday that a pilot program will begin in November with three precincts. It will eventually expand to include 20,000 officers who regularly work patrol.

Training will include how to talk to the public, how to de-escalate tense situations and how to use force if necessary, Bratton said.

Officers currently only receive annual firearms training, Bratton said.

The new training is aimed at changing the culture of the department, Bratton said.

Eric Garner died July 17 when the asthmatic father of six was stopped for selling loose cigarettes. Two NYPD officers have been reassigned during the investigation.
