NYC to Close 3 Underperforming Schools

City says schools failed to improve

Three struggling public schools in New York City will soon be closed.

Department of Education officials said Thursday that the schools were closing because they had failed to improve.

The three schools were given D's or F's on report cards from the city this year. They are located in the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan.

Teachers union President Randi Weingarten said money spent to close schools could be put to better use turning them around.

Department of Education officials said they are planning to close other schools as well.
