NYC Zoos Face Layoffs Despite Buyouts

The organization that runs the Bronx and Central Park zoos said more than 100 employees have agreed to take buyouts, but layoffs will still be necessary as the economy takes a bite out of its budget.

Still, the Wildlife Conservation Society also announced plans Monday to conserve 60 important wild places around the world and continue updating its New York attractions. They also include the Prospect Park and Queens zoos and the New York Aquarium.

Enhancements include new hyena and aardvark exhibits opening soon in the Bronx and snow leopards in Central Park.

The society is trimming its payroll by $10 million. It is estimated that dozens of its 1,200 employees may lose their jobs.

Its attractions drew more than 4 million visitors last year.
