A New York City street has been co-named in honor of an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo who police say was fatally shot last fall in the crossfire between two gangs, hours before the city's West Indian Day parade.
Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp., was shot in the head during a pre-dawn party celebrating the parade. He died at a hospital.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Democratic City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo on Sunday announced the co-naming of a portion of Clinton Avenue in Brooklyn, which will now also be known as "Carey Gabay Way." Gabay would've turned 44 that day.
De Blasio says Gabay put the needs of workers ahead of his own.
The City Council passed the proposal to name the street after Gabay back in February.
Police released new photos in March of the men suspected of killing Gabay.
