Staten Island Yankees Ask for Fans' Help in Search for New Name

The Staten Island Yankees are looking for a new name after years of donning the pinstripes.

The team announced Monday that it will take on an identity all its own after 15 years under the Yankees' name. It said rebranding the team into something more specific will increase its popularity.

The team is looking to rebrand for the 2017 New York-Penn League season and called for ideas from the community on Monday.

“We are very proud to be Yankees, but equally proud to be part of this community. What moniker best represents this city, borough, and team? You tell us! We want to encompass the passion, cultures, tradition and pride of Staten Island, New York,” Will Smith, the team’s president, said.

Although the team’s name will change, it’ll keep its affiliation with the New York Yankees.

Introduced in 1999, the minor-league franchise has won six New York-Penn League titles, the most of any team in its league.
