Father Killed After Son, 19, Runs Stop Sign in Queens: NYPD

A father was killed and three other people were injured after the man’s 19-year-old son ran a stop sign and crashed into another car Sunday evening in Queens, the NYPD said.

A Honda sedan driven by the teen collided with a Nissan SUV driven by a 17-year-old boy who only had a permit just after 6 p.m. in Cambria Heights, according to police.

While police initially said a teenage girl had died in the crash, officials later identified the deceased as 50-year-old Garth Jackson of Elmont.

Police said the Honda was headed south on 231st Street and ran the stop sign at 119th Avenue, striking the Nissan, which was going east on 119th Avenue with no stop sign.

The 19-year-old was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition and his 47-year-old mother was taken to North Shore Manhasset Hospital in stable condition. Jackson was taken to Franklin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 17-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital in stable condition.

Neighbors said they could hear the impact from the crash from their homes.

"I was inside my house and I hear a big, everlasting bang," Eunice Francis, a witness, said.

The Honda could be seen mangled next to the Nissan, which had a large dent in its left side. First responders had to rip open the top of the Nissan to get those inside out.

"They had to remove the top of the car to remove the bodies, so that's why it looks so bad over there," Xavier Burrell, of Cambria Heights, said.
