Police Rescue Unconscious Boater off Hoffman Island in NYC

Three boaters were rescued by the NYPD after their boat started to take on water near Staten Island.

One of the three boaters was unconscious when police arrived at their 25-foot vessel on the rocky shoreline of Hoffman Island, near Staten Island's eastern shore.

The unconscious 68-year-old woman was airlifted to a hospital. She was listed in critical but stable condition on Sunday night. An 81-year-old man who was found in the boat and a 20-year-old man who was on the rocks both refused medical attention.

It appears the boaters were trying to escape their sinking vessel when they were injured. The 20-year-old man managed to get to shore but the 68-year-old woman became trapped when she attempted to jump over to him.

“The youngest individual on the boat tried to jump onto the rocks. As he did, the female victim tried to follow him. She stepped onto the rocks and slipped in between the rocks and the boat. So as the tide was pushing the boat into the rocks, she was wedged in between that,” Det. Dan Corio, an NYPD Scuba Diver, said.

Photos posted online by the NYPD show the woman being airlifted away and police boats at the scene.
