Proposal Calls for West Village Pier to Be Saved

A Hudson River pier in the West Village would be saved under a proposal that would sell off air rights to the pier to a developer building apartments across the West Side Highway.

The New York Times says the proposal calls for $100 million to be raised through the sale for the development on the highway's eastern side between Clarkson and Charlton streets. Thirty percent of the 1,500 residential units would be low- and moderate income and senior housing.

The money would be used to repair the 15-acre pier, now housing aging athletic fields and public parking lot.

New York City Planning Commission Chairman Carl Weisbrod says the proposal would protect the pier as a community space and provide needed affordable housing.

The plan is subject to public review.
