Another cluster of bacterial meningitis has erupted among HIV-infected gay men in New York City, about two years after a previous outbreak began and ultimately killed 7 people.
The city's health department says three cases of meningitis have occurred in Brooklyn and Queens since Aug. 24, with the last two cases reported in the last three days.
The last outbreak ended in February 2013 after 22 cases were reported, seven of them fatal.
The health department says HIV-positive men having sex with men should get meningitis vaccination.
Vaccinations are also recommended for men, regardless of HIV status, who regularly have intimate contact with other men, the department says.
Bacterial meningitis and an associated blood can cause swelling of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The disease is rare, but people with HIV-weakened immune systems are more susceptible.
