A man was struggling to survive on Sunday night after he was violently beaten by a group of people outside a restaurant in the Bronx over the weekend, police said.

Police say the 36-year-old man was beaten in front of a restaurant at 5523 Broadway in Kingsbridge just after 4:15 a.m. on Sunday.

Someone punched the man in his face and then knocked him to the ground. The group of men and one woman then beat the victim repeatedly as he was lying on the ground unconscious. 

He was taken to an area hospital with head trauma and was in critical condition on Sunday night.

Police say it wasn't immediately clear what sparked the beating.
