A man tricked a 93-year-old woman into paying him thousands of dollars by telling her that her friend was imprisoned at Riker’s Island and needed bail money, police said.
The man called the woman at her Manhattan home late last month and told her that her friend had been arrested and was jailed at Riker’s Island, according to police.
He initially asked her for $6,500 in cash to bail out her friend, but when the woman told him that she could only give him $2,000, he settled on that and headed to her apartment, where she handed him the cash, police said.
After the encounter, the woman became suspicious and called her friend, only to discover that he hadn't been arrested.
The NYPD released images of the man on Wednesday in the hopes of catching him before he strikes again.
