A man in NYPD custody escaped Monday night as officers struggled to restrain a second suspect in the Bronx, police said.

Police say 19-year-old Narciso Rosario was handcuffed from behind when he took off at about 9:40 p.m. He was still on the run as dawn broke Tuesday.

Rosario and a 26-year-old man were being taken into custody at the intersection of East 178th Street and Hughes Avenue when the second man began to resist arrest and a struggle ensued between him and the officers.

As officers tried to subdue the second suspect, Rosario ran away down Hughes Avenue towards East 179th Street, police said. His hands were still cuffed when he fled, according to police.

The NYPD released a photo of Rosario from May on Tuesday morning. They said he was arrested earlier this year for burglary but didn't say what he was being arrested for on Monday night.
