An 11-year-old girl fought off a man who grabbed her bag and shoulder as she walked home from school in Brooklyn, police said.
The girl was near the corner of Highlawn Avenue and West Seventh Street in Gravesend at about 3 p.m. Wednesday when the man approached her, authorities said.
He grabbed her bag and shoulder, and told her to come with him, police said.
The girl was able to wrestle away from the man, screamed and ran home. The man then left the scene, police said.
The suspect is still at large, police said.
Neighbors said Friday that they were startled by the attempt in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.
"It's a safe area," said Jane Gunther. "You would think things like this don't happen."
