A fire broke out at a midtown Manhattan hotel Monday night, creating a stream of smoke that led to some evacuations, fire officials said.
The fire started around 8 p.m. at what appeared to be La Bateau Ivre, a French restaurant and wine bar on the ground floor of Pod Hotel 51 on East 51st Street.
Although the fire was quickly brought under control, an ensuing "smoke condition" inside both the restaurant and the hotel led to some evacuations, according to the FDNY.
Officials said the smoke traveled up 13 floors of the hotel. Dutch tourist Judith van Lavieren was sleeping in her room when she was awoken by firefighters.
"We laid down for a minute and got sleep. And well, we woke up from the firefighters; that we had to go out and take the stairs," van Lavieren said.
A firefighter was taken to the hospital, although the nature of his injuries weren't immediately known. No other injuries were reported.
Officials said they’re investigating the cause of the blaze.
