NYC Residents Support $15 Minimum Wage, Oppose Replacing Tips: Poll

A poll of New York City voters finds that they support the state's plan to phase in a $15-an-hour minimum wage for fast-food workers — but they're opposed to the idea of replacing restaurant tips with higher menu prices.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday says 70 percent of respondents say they back the higher wage for employees at chain fast-food eateries. The increase was approved earlier this year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration.

Those surveyed support the status quo, however, when it comes to tipping waiters and waitresses in other restaurants. Only 36 percent said it was a "good idea" to eliminate tipping and raise menu prices instead.

The telephone poll of 1,155 city voters from Oct. 22 to 28 has a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.
