A woman in a car called a relative to say she was in distress, prompting a 911 call that led to a cross-borough police chase on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and BQE Friday morning, authorities say.

It wasn't clear what kind of distress the woman told the relative she was in, but the relative called 911 and the police chase started when cops spied the vehicle near the Verrazano Bridge on Staten Island.

The pursuit took police across the Verrazano and onto the BQE as they chased the car, which eventually crashed near 65th Street and the Hamilton Parkway in Brooklyn. Several people ran out of the car when it crashed; at least one man was taken into custody, and it wasn't clear how many others were loose.

NYPD officers were investigating near the dark-colored sedan as day broke. An NYPD aviation helicopter circled above and surrounding streets were closed.

The woman who initially called the relative was taken into custody before dawn and has not been called a suspect.

A man inside a Rite Aid said that he tended to a woman in a car that was hit during the pursuit. She was taken away by ambulance. It wasn't immediately known if anyone else was injured.
