NYC Bar McSorley's Shut Down Due to Health Violations

The historic McSorley's Old Ale House in the East Village has shut down due to health violations.

A yellow stick from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was seen posted in the window of the famed bar on East 7th Street on Thursday.

The health department said it closed the bar because of public health hazards, including food held at the wrong temperature and rats. The health department says it can reopen once it corrects the issues. A person in the bar declined to comment.

The bar opened in 1854 and only serves two kinds of beer, dark ale and light ale. After a lawsuit, the once male-only establishment was to open the bar to women in 1970.
