New York City is joining a Justice Department program aimed at halting terrorist recruitment programs in U.S. cities.
Some civil liberties groups have opposed the program and urged de Blasio, a Democrat, to reconsider his decision to join.
The New York Civil Liberties Union on Wednesday registered concerns that the program could discriminate against law-abiding American Muslims.
The mayor announced his intention to join the Strong Cities Network in a speech late Tuesday.
He stressed that the program would treat American Muslims fairly. De Blasio says that it's important to stop intolerance. He says that can help prevent extremism and violence.
The Justice Department has described the network as a coalition among cities and communities to share information and training guides.
Other cities participating include Los Angeles and Boston.
