    Four firefighters were injured battling a fire that broke out at an apartment building in upper Manhattan on Thursday morning, fire officials said. 

    Plumes of smoke rose up from the Hamilton Heights building after the fire erupted in a top floor apartment there shortly before 1:15 a.m.

    Fire officials said the fire may have spread to the roof of the six story building at 605 W. 141st Street, although this wasn’t immediately clear.

    Onlookers watched as dozens of firefighters attempted to control the fire. They were dousing it with water at 1:30 a.m. and it was under control by 2:32 a.m.

    Four firefighters were injured, including one who suffered serious injuries. The other three firefighters had minor injuries. All four of them were taken to an area hospital, officials said. The seriously injured firefighter was in stable condition by 4 a.m. 

    One resident was briefly trapped in the fire but was ultimately able to get out with only minor injuries. He or she refused medical attention. 

    The cause of the fire is not yet known.
