Baby Girl in Serious Condition, 2 Others Injured in Queens Fire: Officials

A raging apartment fire in Flushing sent three people to the hospital Friday morning, including a baby girl who was in serious condition, fire officials said.

The baby girl's mother was also rushed to New York Hospital in Queens, as was a third person. The mother passed out, possibly from smoke inhalation, according to neighbors. She was taken away in a stretcher.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. at 65-64 Parsons Blvd. in the Pomonok Houses. Fire officials said that the fire was on the first floor of the three-story building.

A dramatic scene unfolded as residents tried to escape the smoke and flames. At one point the smoke was so thick that people had to go to the roof of the building and cross over to an adjoining building to escape, witnesses said.

“Very scary, very scary. The smoke was so intense, I thank God we didn’t get trapped inside,” resident Sylvia Friedl said.

Torched clothing, a mattress and other items littered the ground outside the apartment around 4 a.m. as authorities investigated.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
