A Yonkers firefighter who rescued people on Sept. 11, 2001, has died.

Yonkers Fire Lt. John Rodriguez died last Sunday at the age of 53 from 9/11-related cancer, his firehouse said.

Rodriguez, who was nicknamed “J-Rod,” was born in Cuba. He was married to Jo-Ann Rodriguez for 26 years and was the father of John and James Rodriguez.

“A great family man, a great fireman, a great man,” Lt. Peter Doran, of the Yonkers Fire Department, said.

Doran said there are no “clean” photos of Rodriguez because he was always busy working. He not only served as a firefighter but as a licensed plumber for Performance Plumbing and Heating.

Rodriguez’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 24 at St. John the Baptist at 670 Yonkers Ave. Cremation will follow at Ferncliff Crematory in Hartsdale.
