Four people were killed and a woman was badly hurt when a man lost control of his vehicle and slammed head-on into another car on Long Island, police said.
Miraculously, an 11-month-old baby survived the devastating crash on Yaphank Middle Island Road in Yaphank on Monday night.
Police said Gustave Geyer, 25, lost control of his pickup and crashed into a Nissan Altima around 10:45 p.m.; the impact ignited both vehicles.
Geyer, who was alone in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the Nissan, along with a man and woman in the car, also died.
Another female passenger in the Nissan was taken to a hospital with life-threatening burns and head injuries. The baby boy in the car was taken to the hospital as well, but his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
Detectives said they believed all five victims in the Nissan were related.
Yaphank Middle Island Road was closed down a mile away from the scene of the collision Tuesday morning. A cop car was blocking access to the road at Shannon Boulevard as rain continued to pour down.
Firefighters and rescue workers were seen working in the rain next to a mangled silver truck and a black sedan. A body covered in a white sheet was on the side of the road as homicide detectives scoured the scene.
