NY Launches New Push to Register Homeowners for Tax Break

Homeowners are entitled to the exemption if their family incomes are lower than $500,000

New Yorkers who haven't registered yet for a property tax break are about to get automated telephone calls reminding them that the Dec. 31 deadline is coming up.

The state tax department will be notifying about 620,000 homeowners who haven't registered yet for Basic STAR, including more than 210,000 in New York City. It says 2 million have registered.

The state set the Dec. 31 deadline to re-register for STAR as part of a program to weed out anyone claiming the exemption on properties other than their primary residence.

Homeowners are entitled to the exemption if their family incomes are lower than $500,000.

The program doesn't include seniors getting the Enhanced STAR exemption. They're still required to apply annually or participate in an "income verification program.''
