Chemical Spill, Chain Reaction Crash Close NY Parkway for Hours: Police

Cars swerved to avoid a disabled vehicle on a parkway in Westchester, causing a chain reaction crash that ended in a hazardous materials cleanup, police say.

Four vehicles crashed as they tried to avoid the disabled vehicle on Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh.

One of the vehicles was carrying pool cleaning supplies, which spilled onto the roadway. Police said no industrial chemicals spilled and that the cleaning products may have included chlorine.

Minor injuries were reported from the crash, but no one was taken to the hospital, police said.

Southbound traffic along the parkway, just north of the Jackson Avenue exit, was closed for hours for the hazmat cleanup. A chaotic mess of cars could be seen trying to navigate the resulting traffic jam, with some vehicles driving across the median to the northbound lanes.

The stretch of roadway reopened at 1:30 a.m.
