NRC to Make Indian Point Top Priority: Cuomo

The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission is making a top priority of reviewing the Indian Point power plant located north of New York City near two geologic fault line, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

Cuomo says a state team will review federal data from the NRC and take part in analyzing the safety of the plant in the event of an earthquake.

He says Tuesday he still opposes relicensing the Westchester County nuclear facility. The plant is within 50 miles of millions of people Cuomo says could never be adequately evacuated in an emergency.

Entergy Corp., the plant's owner, says the facility is not susceptible to the kind of earthquake that rocked Japan and led to a nuclear plant crisis. But the company says changes are expected.
