Service Resumes on 2 NJ Transit Lines, Heavy Delays Expected

Trains were briefly brought to a halt by a police investigation at a New Jersey Transit rail station Thursday morning, authorities said.

Trains got running on the Main/Bergen and Port Jervis lines at about 10:30 a.m., about an hour after police were called to inspect a suspicious item at the Ridgewood station.

Delays were still topping an hour across the rail system after police gave the all-clear at about 10:30 a.m., and NJ Transit buses and private carriers were cross-honoring rail passes.

The investigation about the suspicious item comes amid heightened tensions following bombings in New York and New Jersey over the weekend that injured 31 people.

After the explosion in Chelsea Saturday night, the NYPD got more than 400 calls for suspicious packages in less than 48 hours, according to police. On a typical day, police log about 90 to 100 suspicious package calls, according to the Daily News.

Authorities have been pressing people to contact police at any hint of suspicious activity, highlighting bystanders' roles in finding two undetonated bombs allegedly planted by 28-year-old Ahmad Rahami.

Bystanders found devices on West 27th Street in Chelsea, not far from the blast site, and near a NJ Transit station in Elizabeth, New Jersey. And the New Jersey bar owner who found the suspect sleeping in the doorway of his Linden bar was also credited for being vigilant and contacting police right away.
