A train struck a "trespasser" near Newark Broad Street early Friday, shutting down most New Jersey Transit service on the Morris & Essex and Montclair Boonton lines for an hour and leaving thousands of people at a loss for how to get to the city as the peak morning commute got underway.
NJ Transit tweeted at 7:51 a.m. that service on the M&E and MOBO lines had resumed; that message came less than 10 minutes after the agency announced a complete suspension of service on those lines to and from New York Penn Station and Hoboken. Delays of up to 90 minutes were expected.
The agency said the "trespasser" was hit just east of the station around 6:30 a.m.; the person's condition wasn't immediately clear. Initially there were only partial service suspensions on the affected lines.
NJT rail passes are being cross-honored by NJT bus and DeCamp Bus and Lakeland Bus. NJ Transit warned of heavy bus congestion too, though, as vehicles tried to accommodate the hundreds of extra commuters who normally take trains.
