NJ Transit: Hudson River Train Tunnell on Schedule

The project will double the number of eastbound trains that enter New York's Penn Station every day

The planned train tunnel under the Hudson River is on schedule, according to NJ Transit officials.

Executive Director Richard Sarles told an Assembly committee on Monday the $8.7 billion project should start by the end of 2009 and finish by 2017.

Officials said the project will double the number of eastbound trains that enter New York's Penn Station every day, from 22 to 44, and create thousands of construction-related jobs.

The project has secured $5.7 billion in funding from the state of New Jersey and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Officials say they still need $3 billion from the federal government.
