Man Killed by NJ Transit Train in Montvale

The man, believed to be in his 70s, crawled under a crossing gate as the train approached and put his back to the train

New Jersey Transit officials say a man was struck and killed by a train in northern New Jersey.

NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder says the accident occurred just after noon Wednesday in Montvale. The man, believed to be in his 70s, crawled under a crossing gate as the train approached and put his back to the train.

The engineer sounded the train's horn, but could not stop in time. Witnesses said the man, whose name was not released, did not try to move out of the train's path.

None of the 20 passengers aboard the train bound for Spring Valley, N.Y. were injured in the accident. Train service along the Pascack Valley line was briefly suspended following the accident, but normal service resumed later Wednesday.

The accident remains under investigation.
