3 Killed, 2 Hurt in East Orange Crash: Officials

Three people were killed and another two were injured after a head-on two-car crash in New Jersey that nearly involved an NJ Transit bus, officials say.

Essex County prosecutors said that a Toyota 4-Runner was heading south on South Grove Street in East Orange when it collided head-on with a Nissan Maxima. The impact flung the two cars near an occupied NJ Transit bus, but authorities say that vehicle stopped in time and wasn't hit.

The Nissan's driver and two passengers, all male, were killed in the collision, authorities say. The Toyota's two female passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and several passengers on the bus were checked out at the scene.

It's not clear what caused the crash.

The prosecutor's office's vehicular homicide unit is investigating.
