NJ State Trooper Injured in Crash

A New Jersey State Police trooper was seriously injured Sunday in a car crash on Interstate 95 while searching for two occupants of an abandoned car, the State Police said.

The incident occurred at the Exit 31 ramp in Howell Township in Monmouth County, State Police Capt. Gerald Lewis said in a statement.

The trooper's name has not been released.

According to NJ.com, a 30-year-old woman from Blackwood was found hiding in a nearby wooded area a short time later, and taken into custody in connection with the incident.  The search is on for a second person, officials said.

"The trooper was not injured by gunfire," Lewis said. "The circumstances surrounding this incident and the trooper's injuries are still under investigation," NJ.com reports.

Gov. Chris Christie said he was headed to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune to visit the injured trooper's family.
