The death of a driver who had grappled with state police on the New Jersey Turnpike is being investigated by the Attorney General's Shooting Response Team.
Authorities said the man, 34-year-old Robert Tuite Jr. of Patchogue, N.Y., was found unresponsive inside his late-model BMW in the left lane of the turnpike in Teaneck Sunday night.
State police roused the driver and had him pull to the side of the road. Once backup troopers arrived, they gave the man a sobriety test then attempted to arrest him for driving while intoxicated.
Authorities said the man was restrained after he resisted attempts to handcuff him. He then experienced an undetermined medical problem. Troopers administered first aid, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting response team is called to investigate shootings and other incidents involving the New Jersey State Police.
