NJ Man Dies in SUV Crash Upstate

State police say a 21-year-old New Jersey man has been killed and five other people injured when their sport utility vehicle crashed on the New York Thruway in the Hudson Valley.

Troopers say Yamil Mendez of Paterson was driving the SUV north on Interstate 87 when a blown tire caused the vehicle to crash and overturn several times around 11:45 a.m. Sunday in the town of New Paltz, 75 miles north of New York City.

Police say Mendez was ejected from the vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at a Poughkeepsie hospital.

Troopers say five young adults riding in the SUV were treated at the same hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Three are from Paterson and two are from New York City.

Police say Mendez wasn't wearing a seat belt.
