Suspect Arrested in Newark Hit-and-Run

Police arrested the driver in a hit-and-run accident involving a state corrections officer in Newark.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run accident involving a state corrections officer in Newark.

Keith Johnson, 28, from Newark, was charged Saturday with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to render aid.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the Northern State Corrections officer was walking in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Mount Prospect Avenue when he was struck.

The officer, Victor Gomez, is in critical condition at University Hospital.

Newark Police said they located Johnson and his vehicle on Clifton Avenue.

Johnson was additionally charged with fourth-degree driving with a suspended or revoked license.

He remains in jail on $75,000 bail.
