NJ Cops Kill One Robbery Suspect, Wound Another

Preliminary investigation suggests suspects didn't fire at police

Officers shot and killed a robbery suspect and critically wounded another outside a New Jersey hotel early Saturday.

The shooting occurred just after 4 a.m. when police responded to a reported robbery at the Knight's Inn on Spring Street in Elizabeth, not far from Newark Airport. There have been at least two robberies at that location in the last few days, authorities said.

Authorities say the officers confronted the armed suspects and a shootout ensued. No officers were injured. Police recovered a handgun on one of the suspects along with dozens of evidence markers and what looks to be about 10 shell casings.

A preliminary investigation suggests the suspects did not fire at police, authorities said.

One suspect was taken to Trinitas Hospital in traumatic arrest and was pronounced dead upon arrival. The other went to University Hospital in Newark, where he was in critical condition.

Police don't believe anyone else was involved with the attempted heist. The investigation is ongoing.
