NJ Community Suspends Police Chief Over Email on Racial Profiling

A small community in New Jersey suspended its police chief in light of a state investigation into a email he allegedly sent in 2014 that appears to condone racial profiling.

The Wycoff Township Committee voted Tuesday to suspend Chief Benjamin Fox, Mayor Kevin Rooney announced in a written statement on Wednesday.

The email at issue was sent to the police department in December 2014 and was released earlier this year by the New Jersey chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"Profiling, racial of otherwise, has its place in law enforcement when used correctly and applied fairly," the email states.

"Black gang members from Teaneck commit burglaries in Wycoff," it continues. "That's why we check out suspicious black people in white neighborhoods."

The email has prompted an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
