The black bear hunt that's being staged in eight New Jersey counties this week is about to come to an end.
State wildlife officials say the hunt will conclude on Saturday.
Hunters have killed 189 bears so far, including 38 on Friday. More than half of the kills have occurred in Sussex County.
The hunt's first three days were reserved for bow hunting, while hunting with bows and muzzle-loading guns have been allowed during the last three days.
State parks and wildlife management areas that have been open to hunting in Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex and Warren counties, and in areas of Bergen, Mercer, Passaic and Somerset counties.
Officials say the hunts help control the black bear population and minimize run-ins with humans.
Opponents say the hunts are inhumane and unnecessary.
