NJ Assembly to Vote on Property Tax Cap

The New Jersey Assembly is meeting Monday to take up legislation that would cap local spending and property tax increases at 2 percent.

The Senate approved the measure last week. Gov. Chris Christie could sign it as early as Tuesday.

The legislation is one of dozens of proposals from the Republican governor to tame the nation's highest property taxes.

New Jerseyans pay an average of $7,300 per household. The tax cap bill is a compromise brokered by Christie and

Democratic Senate President Steve Sweeney. It allows exceptions to the cap for costs towns and school districts can't control like pension and health care costs.
